    I cannot seem to get my ballistics calculator built in to my pad ds35 lrf to work. I chrono'ed the bullets I'm using and input all the data from the box other than the speed. I also measued 45 mm scope height. Can Mark or someone please explain what might be happening? I missed two foxes last night at 175 metres because of this. For context, I also hit one at roughly the same distance a couple nights ago.. could there be a big spread in the bullet speed? Using Fiocchi 223 55grain epn rounds ona tikka t3x lite. Thank you.

    • @ShootingCountryTV
      @ShootingCountryTV 5 часов назад

      Double check everything you have entered to ensure it is correct, check zero by shooting a 5 round group, then if all ok check drops at various ranges on paper. Using 55 grain bullets in a 223 zeroed at 100 yards, the drop will likely be less than an inch at 175 yards. In my experience the tikka rifles often perform well with Hornady ammunition so might be worth trying these if the rifle isn’t shooting well 👍 Cheers mark

    Big piece of plywood with a yellow pages screwed to it does the job, it makes a little bit of noise, but nothing too loud. I think the rifle used plays the largest part. My HW100 is practically inaudible, it doesn't even frighten pigeons that are sitting on the fence, but my 97K with it's big piston is pretty loud.

    We are in the countryside. We both have BRK Ghosts. There are no houses too near by. We also shoot at blank ammunition to create an effect. There are shotguns and crow scarers goling off all the time. You shouldn't set out to annoy people and we need to protect our hobby. The problem seems to arise from townies moving into the country and don't like the sound of it. If you shoot in your back garden in an urban environment that's a different issue.

    Putting scientist hat on. 3dB is double the sound pressure level (SPL) but 10dB is subjectively twice as loud; it has a logarithmic scale. The standard placement of a dB meter would be 1 metre in front of the muzzle and 1 metre off to the side, this is for consistency when testing. The way a Maxim works is by changing the SPL, slowing it down, in other words, dropping the pitch of the note produced. Silencer or moderator, same thing really; Maxim called it a silencer but it moderates the SPL. The primitive hair curler silencer just absorbs noise, it is not a moderator. If you have dropped ~10dB you have halved the volume, plus you have dropped the pitch of the note.

    • @ShootingCountryTV
      @ShootingCountryTV 5 дней назад

      So, am in incorrect in my description? When you are using a sound meter it will read a shot at say 8odb, then the next shot at 82 then 81. There's virtually no difference in sound.

    • @boxiedog
      @boxiedog 4 дня назад

      The sound level meter in your phone is not great at percussive noises, but as a rule of thumb, at a distance of 2m, a measured reduction of 3db(a) is reducing the perceived volume by half.

    • @jeffslade1892
      @jeffslade1892 4 дня назад

      @@ShootingCountryTV true, the typical human ear can only discern a change of 3dB. A musicians trained ear might manage 1dB. It is not just that though, our ears are more sensitive to quiet high pitch sounds, a predator lurking in the grass nearby, than to loud deep notes, a herd of elephants miles away. At low level we boost the bass on the hifi. At high level, a rock band, we turn the bass down. If we can make the retort of an airgun not just quieter but lower pitch, it is less threatening.

    • @jeffslade1892

    fyi ;) The inventor of the "silencer" was Hiram Percy Maxim, son of Sir Hiram Stevens Maxim (british) inventor of the machine gun. As well as the Silent Firearm US patent 1909 he invented the exhaust silencer for infernal combustion engines at the same time ca.1902. A swiss chap Jakob Stahel had invented a silenced humane cattle killer in 1892.

    The flight noise might be an air version of cavitation in water. Sand is the best as it self heals but only if its dry. Lead in a pan, tray or similar is very good indeed but dangerous to DIY. Plumbers putty does not self heal like sand nor does cloth if you shoot the same spot. A concrete slab pitched forward I would say is essential. The pellet can leave the boundary if you have perm. A friend had a garden range that backed on to a field he had perm for too. It is 50 feet from the centre of the carriageway ie under 17 yards and its from the centre So if you shot from the centrea reservation of the M4....... your unlikely to hit the sides. You must cause reason for distress to travellers on the highway to contravene the law within 50 from the centre sp 25 feet each side Not the precise wording though. Probably only likely if your gaden borders a road or path within the 25 feet If in doubt ask if an FEO can visit and assess. It took me over 6 months to have a 2nd cabinet inspected and approved so good luck with that. Some rifles can be very quiet - my FAC Impact Mk2 is as quiet as my sub 12 HW100 with an HW mod.... apart from the impact noise.... out of choice I would go dry sand every time. It stops really well. Self heals and you can recover the shot lead clumps to recycle. The sand will become dust as the grains break down but its cheapish anyway

    I have found that when filming the mics pick up and amplify the oddest of things at times. How loud is that hammer spring on the Ghost, very pingy and probably louder than the exiting pellet I've found that when I've had a camera set up down range I can't hear the muzzle noise or rifle, that includes the springers. However, being close to it it does sound loud?
